03/12/2025  Instil the Importance of Sign Language

National

In conjunction with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 'Kafe Jari-Jari Ku' was established as a great example in providing job opportunities to Persons With Disabilities, PWD. The cafe not only offers a place for people to savour coffee, but also has a role as an interactive centre that raises the people's awareness on the importance of communication via sign language.

The cafe is operated by five skilled baristas, each introducing themselves using sign language as their professional identity. Although only working approximately for a month, they displayed high levels of professionalism in providing drinks and interacting with the customers. Despite the PWD status, communication is not a major obstacle. When asked about their challenges during their duty, the baristas agreed that they face no major challenges.

The cafe business operated by PWD is a symbol of strength, courage, and resilience. It also contributed to creating a community that is more caring, open and appreciates diversity. With continuous support, the cafe has the potential to grow further as an inclusive business model that benefits the economy and community holistically.
